As I’m writing this text for this week’s Touchstone, it is Tuesday, March 2 and I am still in the midst of opening birthday cards from so many of you. It was somewhat of an overwhelming experience on Sunday and I probably muttered some words of thanks and went on with the end of mass. I really do want to take the time now to thank you. Please know that I will not be able to do so personally, in a very timely fashion, simply because of the wealth of your own generosity in this moment.
I’ve often described this past year as one in which (as the pandemic first landed) a vast number of friends all went missing in the same moment. I think so many of us had that experience last spring. I find that this past weekend I had the opposite experience of having so many people come into view all at once, through cards, notes, and generosity. I cannot thank you all enough for this experience. I look forward to the time when we can all get back together and enjoy that same sense of community in person once again.
I hope to write more about this next week, as currently I am still in the process of opening and reading all of your well wishes.
This week's Touchstone is about the second movement of the passion, John 18, 10-27, and was originally in titled “Denial.” But it really is about more than that. This entire movement seems to take a momentary detour from the ongoing drama of the passion and focus on the character of Peter. I have always seen him as an example of how to give something your all, fall down in defeat, yet get back up again and continue to try.
As I will each week, I’ve included our recording of this movement from 2009 and the pdf of the complete text of the Passion (which is the same as last week’s, but this way you don’t have to hunt for it!).
God Bless and be safe as we continue moving towards Spring, Easter and the return of normalcy after vaccinations!
