Holy Thursday is a day with several themes. We are most familiar with the washing of the feet, because it is such a large part of our ritual on this evening. It is also, however, the celebration of priesthood throughout the Church. It is the proper day for the Chrism Mass, when oils are consecrated at the Cathedral and priests renew the vows they took at their ordination.
These two themes come together reminding us that priesthood is not a status in our church, but a ministry. The priestly life becomes knit to Jesus’ mandate to “serve one another.” We see in the priesthood of Jesus, the servant who is washing the feet of the disciples. These two themes together create more than enough reflective material to fill the day.
But there is another theme that is sometimes overlooked, possibly because the liturgy doesn’t focus us there. Actually, it would be better to note that the liturgy focuses us there so often that Holy Thursday has little chance of “standing out” in this regard.
