May
we pause and listen to the winds that stir in our hearts in this strange, new
world. May we sit in the quiet darkness
of this pause and take time to pray and connect with Jesus. Together may we begin to wonder how we might
be born anew when we return to the new normal that awaits us.

Rebirth and Renewal in the Spirit

In today’s Gospel from John we hear of the nighttime encounter between Nicodemus and Jesus. The story of this encounter skillfully walks us toward a better understanding of how our own encounters with Jesus and our sacramental experiences lead us to rebirth and renewal in the Spirit.
Jesus’s responses to Nicodemus speak to our contemporary lives as well and remind us of the mission bestowed upon us at our Baptisms. Jesus concludes by using the wind as a beautiful metaphor for the Spirit; just like He so thoughtfully does in parables, Jesus uses an image we can easily understand to lead us to a deeper truth.

Monday of the Second Week of Easter
There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
He came to Jesus at night and said to him,
“Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God,
for no one can do these signs that you are doing
unless God is with him.”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless one is born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to him,
“How can a man once grown old be born again?
Surely he cannot reenter his mother’s womb and be born again, can he?”
Jesus answered,
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless one is born of water and Spirit
he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.
What is born of flesh is flesh
and what is born of spirit is spirit.
Do not be amazed that I told you,
‘You must be born from above.’
The wind blows where it wills,
and you can hear the sound it makes,
but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes;
so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

- You may choose to be a part of the "stay-at-home" Virtual Assembly that will be streamed live along with Fr. Pat and the liturgical ministers, who will also be at home. The assembly will be muted, but we will see one another participating with our responses, gestures and singing. While it isn't just like being at MPB, it is the closest we have, and it can be a powerful experience. "Seats" are limited so sign up HERE and you'll be sent a Zoom link and more instructions by Saturday morning.
