Today’s readings fall in the 16th week of Ordinary Time. In so many ways, it is hard to call this time in which we are living “ordinary”. As I reflect on that word, today I feel called to ask God to remind me to see the sacred in the ordinary…and even more importantly to see the sacred in the uncertainty in front of me. The readings today, remind of God’s faithfulness to God’s people and Jesus’s faithfulness to his followers. As I reflected on today’s Gospel from Matthew, I felt called to two main threads of reflection: the first is to embrace a broader sense of family, by observing the way Jesus reacts to the news that Mary and his brothers have arrived and are waiting outside. And the second, is the call to be present in the moment.
In this reading, I was overcome by the way Jesus modeled the importance of being present to the people in the room.As we reflect deeper on today’s readings, let us ask God to open our hearts to the sacred among us and to help us discern how to do the will of the Father this day.

Tuesday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time
While Jesus was speaking to the crowds,
his mother and his brothers appeared outside,
wishing to speak with him.
Someone told him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside,
asking to speak with you.”
But he said in reply to the one who told him,
“Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”
And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said,
“Here are my mother and my brothers.
For whoever does the will of my heavenly Father
is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
