Holding Hope; Forging Futures

I’m hoping to keep today’s Touchstone “light.” We’ve all had heavy times in the past week and we are just starting to hear some real hope on the COVID front. I wanted to simply check in and let people know that scripture reminds us to never give attention to those who tell us that the world is crashing down and there’s no future for us!
We find our hope in God and grace and one another. Life has dramatic ups and downs, and sometimes we paint a dark picture of what’s coming just to paint and believe that we can actually predict such things. It makes us feel more in control even while imagining that everything else is out of control. It is one of those tricks that creates a moment of calm and an extended period of worry.
For music I picked something very different. It has no religious import, but is a wonderful celebration of joy. It is the Postlude that was played directly after the funeral of a beloved parishioner, Dave Little, whose participation in and love of Bluegrass music permeated his life. His family brought their instruments and, along with our own musicians who played with Dave through the years, offered this incredibly light-hearted moment of fun.
I hope you enjoy the piece. Be safe and embrace your hopeful side.

In this same vein, as an accompanying song I went scavenging through my own archives to find a favorite piece that I used to sing fairly often. Not really a church composition, per se, it is a song by Stephen Schwartz about being open and prepared enough to recognize when something amazing comes along and being ready take a chance, make the change necessary and embrace the unimagined possibilities of a greater, joy-filled life.
I hope you are all continuing to be well and to actively and intentionally hunt the good moments and savor them when you can.

Thursday of the Thirty Second Week in Ordinary Time
Asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come,
Jesus said in reply,
“The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed,
and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’
For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you.”Then he said to his disciples,
“The days will come when you will long to see
one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.
There will be those who will say to you,
‘Look, there he is,’ or ‘Look, here he is.’
Do not go off, do not run in pursuit.
For just as lightning flashes
and lights up the sky from one side to the other,
so will the Son of Man be in his day.
But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation.”
